Feel free to ask more questions.Ībout not letting TR control the Kickr, Just realized I took that question in a different direction than you probably meant. As a result, I actually look forward towards my indoor training which helps get me on the bike. Since I have less to worry about I can afford to watch netflix and still get a quality workout in (because let's face it, staring at a computer screen would get boring eventually). Had I been on my own, I probably would've faded hard (especially on The Revolver.) The second reason I like the kickr is because it makes training so much easier mentally. My kickr kept me honest though and I literally struggled to keep myself on my bike. Doing the Tour de Sufferlandria was absolutely brutal because I was sick at the time and even knocking it down to 80% FTP was difficult for me. I know if i start a workout with a TSS rating of 90+ that at the end of the workout I will have gotten a TSS of 90 or so for the day because there is no cheating the ERG mode. Now, why is this a good thing and why do I love it so much? Two main reasons: first of all, it keeps me honest. Similarly if you slow down, it will get increasingly difficult to pedal. If you pedal faster, it will get easier with each stroke but still net the same amount of power. You described the use of the ERG mode which makes it so that you have a consistent power output based on the workout. Training with a computer-assisted and power-based trainer lets you do things you could never do on a lower end trainer. A year ago I probably would have thought it was silly to spend so much money on a trainer but there really is a difference. You can also use the Kickr without it being plugged in or used with an app.though you'd be missing out on the main features that make it a high end trainer.
I personally use Trainer Road though so haven't tried looking at android apps. Trainer Road is not needed to run the Kickr, you can also use some apps on the apple store and possibly the android. The high end trainers are going to have built in resistance features which make for a much better training experience. I can see casual riders or non cyclists not understanding the difference between a low end trainer and a high-end trainer. I'd recommend getting a bike mat (got mine for ~$30 on amazon) which will help cut the vibrations and slightly cut the noise. My personal experience is that the wahoo kickr is not as loud as my magnetic trainer.
You can read an extensive review of the wahoo Kickr from DC Rain Maker. The Wahoo Kickr was about on par with similar trainers, except the Lemond Revolution which was literally as loud as a jet engine. How has this combination of tools changed your training?
I look in TR's workout library and more and more I'm seeing workouts people have done where the wattage line is razor sharp which tells me people are letting TR control the wattage. I did a search in this sub and can't find much on using TR in this very unique way - the one Kickr thread I found, the topvoted comment was actually a guy who returned it for being too loud.ĭo people really not get what the difference is between using a Kickr for TrainerRoad and a normal trainer? Do people really buy the Kickr and then NOT let TR control the resistance automatically?įor anyone out there who actually is using these two amazing tools together in the way they're supposed to be used, how has your experience been?
I feel like people don't really get the beauty of the TrainerRoad/Wahoo Kickr combination. I've been lusting after a Kickr for a while now.
